Artist's Comments

Image was taken at South Lakes Wild Animal Park.

This young baboon was killed by one of the male adults of the group, this is not uncommon in baboon groups and a lot of other animals also kill their young.

I’m not too sure what to feel about this piece. It didn’t die just so you could take this picture, so I’m not going in that direction but it did die at a public zoo where caretakers are responsible for the welfare of the animals. It’s not like it would happen in Nature, it’s a man made environment and there are a thousands variables that could change the outcome of such situations. Someone should report this to some form of authoritative power, to some activist movement because it obviously needs more attention than it is getting.

As for the piece, there is a lot of shock value, it is quite disturbing but I guess that’s because I’m not used to seeing this type of photograph, depicting brutal slaying of animals by animals. Other than that, I really don’t know what to say.

Well actually.. Zoos try very hard to 'let' the animals act the same as the would in the wild, and baboons do kill young sometimes in the wild.. just lion many other species of animals, lions and dolphins etc. The caretakers are responsible to a certain extent, the reason that this animal wasnt yet removed from that enclosure is because its mother would not even let any other of the baboons come near it, and I can't exactly see the keeps trying to get it away from its mother either.

"Someone should report this to some form of authoritative power, to some activist movement because it obviously needs more attention than it is getting" - I don't really understand what you mean by this, or what that would achieve. I don't believe that people should use power to stop animals acting completely normal.

It maybe shocking but I do disagree with you about it being disturbing.

Zoos are not natural, they imprison animals for your enjoyement. The terrain, no matter how much they try to mimic it, isn't the same as the wild, this fucks them up and let's not forget the people visiting and poking their faces through the fences and shooting pictures with blinding flashes.

So Perhaps killing their own happens in the wilderness as well but I'm sure that the human variable is responsible for the animals acting erratically at times. I am opposed to zoos and carnivals that abuse animals for human enjoyement, they are living, breathing creatures that deserve our respect. Feeding these animals fresh food isn't a luxury, it goes against their nature, they want to be free and to hunt. I do not believe any wild animal can be happy in captivity nor can it live or behave 'normally'.

Also, you can't disagree with the way a person feels, that's like saying you disagree with my happiness, it doesn't really make any sense. So, again, I find this picture disturbing.

okay so you have issues with zoos. Everyone to their own on that one, I didnt say they were natural, I said that the people that run the zoos, good zoos that is, try to make it as natural as possible, which i do know is impossible, I'm not stupid. Plus, good zoo's don't just cage animals for peoples enjoyment, thats quite a narrow minded thing to say, because of us humans a lot of animals are becoming extinct through poaching for skin, bone, medicine. Zoos protect animals and help conservation by running breeding programmes. Don't get me wrong, I know that animals deserve to be free and happy, and I wish that poaching didnt happen, and that these animals could live naturally in the wild but zoos play an important role in protecting species. I respect animals entirley.

I don't know which zoos you have been too but they must have been awful for you to think that they are being abused for human enjoyment, a lot of zoos I have been to show the staff looking after these animals indirectly, meaning there are a lot of them to stop people from banging on the walls of enclosures, and using flash for that matter. I do disagree with circus and carnivals using animals in their acts, but that an entirely different thing than a zoo.

but the matter of the argument is that, this killing of the young in this photography is how these animals behave 'normally' wether in a zoo, or the wild.

I don't disagree with your feelings, I disagree with what you say about it being disturbing, as in, I don't think it is disturbing. I thought that was obvious.

Oh, this is really sad! It's like a picture of a war, just with animals. The sharpness and the blured background are awesome. Also the angle. It's just awesome. The best in your gallery so far.

It's what we are, not what we wish to be, that let us become the person we used to be.
Thank you so much, I am glad you appreciate this photo for what it is
